Every Thursday morning, the all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization, Weekend Backpacks for Homeless Kids, fills over 500 backpacks with enough food to feed four people six meals over the weekend. Volunteer drivers pick up the bags then deliver them to various schools in the Baltimore area. There are more than 3,000 homeless children in Baltimore City Schools, and Weekend Backpacks’ mission is to fight this hunger epidemic among Baltimore City school-aged children.
Team LVA had the pleasure of volunteering alongside Weekend Backpacks’ founder, Sandie Nagel, last Thursday. The organization, which started as a small delivery of 18 bags compiled on Sandy’s dining room table, has turned into more than she could have ever imagined. Weekend Backpacks has a volunteer base of about 200 men and women who are committed to its mission. Currently, they deliver bags of food to 21 schools in the Baltimore area and strive to continue adding more and more schools.
